Enhanced Health Information Security Guidelines and AI-powered Speech Recognition

Significant changes are coming in the way medical professionals, where patients can access and share electronic health information (EHI). In our most recent webinar, our guest speaker Michael McCoy, Senior HIPAA Security Expert, discussed the multiple changes to the HIPAA Security Rule and provided best security practices such as discouraging the use of unsupported software.

Cloud-based, HITRUST-certified medical speech recognition, Nuance® Dragon® Medical One (DMO), can assist you in getting and staying compliant as it relates to your patient documentation and EHI requirements

A medical practice using software with no security updates will pose a greater security risk, which would be considered a HIPAA violation. Mr. McCoy provided an overview of the new Information Blocking Rule which is defined by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), as a practice that is likely to interfere with access, exchange, or use of EHI, unless the practice is covered by an exception or is otherwise required by law. In addition, McCoy gave some insight into the “No Surprises Act'' which contains key protections to hold consumers harmless from the cost of unanticipated out-of-network medical bills. The new law takes effect for health plan years beginning on or after January 1, 2022 and it applies to nearly all private health plans offered by employers (including grandfathered group health plans and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program), as well as non-group health insurance policies offered through and outside of the marketplace. These new laws and enhanced guidance will substantially change the way your medical practice performs your daily responsibilities including patient documentation and billing. The guidelines show how you should navigate the information blocking rules and other relevant laws around the sharing of EHI.
